It’s a very valid question, this far along in the season:  “Where’s the snow?”  We haven’t seen much yet, but we’re tracking a couple of storms that could drop some inches on us in the next few days.

First up, Saturday’s storm.  We’ve been watching this “Texas sized storm” for a couple of days now, and it is moving in our direction.  The system passes close enough to the Gulf of Mexico to become even more fueled with moisture before it tracks north.  Up the coast it moves, toward New England – and while the arctic air isn’t in place here, this system does have the potential to create its own cold air for firing up the snow engines.

As this storm works in from the south on Saturday, it will initially start as some light snow/flurries well NW of 495, but there will be mild enough temps in MetroWest and along the coast to bring rain mixed with some snow – and even all rain (Cape and islands) through midday Saturday.  This low will deepen as it moves through, which means a big burst of precip in the afternoon on Saturday.  This is the event.  This is the opportunity for the system to tap into its own dynamic cooling and drag the cold air from upstairs down to the surface along with the burst of precip.

There is still some uncertainty with this storm.  We know it’s coming.  We know we’re in for it on Saturday.  However, the tricky part is in the exact track of the storm, and also where the cold will be cold enough for snow to accumulate.  The snow forecast I’ve posted here in this blog is a good starting point – and if we come close to these numbers, it could be the most snowfall we’ve seen for many of these areas so far this season.

All of this mess wraps up before Saturday expires, but we will still watch for the potential for minor coastal flooding during high tide around 2:30am Sunday.  This will be for north-facing shorelines, mainly along the South Shore.

I can tell you, the cold is BACK next week.  I will also say though, that the jury is still out on Monday’s snowfall.  I have it in my 7on7, but we could miss this snow altogether.  Let’s get through Saturday first.  – Bri
