A 22-year-old man is facing charges after allegedly running from police after crashing a car.
Daniel Nicholas Ballentine of Saugus is facing charges of operating to endanger, using a car without authority, leaving the scene of a car accident involving property damage, and speeding, according to police.
At around 10:45 p.m. on March 19, firefighters spotted a black Mercedes speeding on Arbor Street, according to police. The car crossed both lanes of Main Street and hit a tree on the front lawn of Town Hall.
Firefighters saw Ballentine and a female occupant flee the scene of the crash, police said.
Officers found the woman near the scene and later found Ballentine at the Wenham Country Club. A K-9 unit found Ballentine hiding in a sand bunker on the golf course.
Police say they found $22,650 inside the crashed car along with several cell phones. Officers also found a small amount of marijuana in the car that police say is not enough to justify criminal charges.
Ballentine and the woman were evaluated by medical personnel but declined treatment at a hospital.
Police say Ballentine could face more charges. He is being held pending arraignment at Ipswich District Court.
