NEW YORK (AP) — The Secret Service says an armed man who tried to breach a secured area outside New York’s Trump Tower as Donald Trump was coming home has been arrested.

But authorities say the man was a retired law enforcement officer who was armed legally and posed no threat to the Republican presidential nominee.

Federal authorities haven’t released his identity. He’s due in court Wednesday to answer expected charges of resisting federal officers.

The Secret Service says he defied agents’ orders and tried to walk through a secured stretch of sidewalk outside Trump’s skyscraper Tuesday night.

The agency says the man had a concealed handgun but was permitted and didn’t express ill will toward anyone the Secret Service protects.

Trump soon arrived without problems.

His campaign referred inquiries to the Secret Service.
