IPSWICH, MASS. (WHDH) - A Secret Service agent critically injured in a fatal car crash late last year was honored at a charity event in Ipswich Monday.

The event was held by the Officer Harold Vitale Memorial Fund, which helps ease the financial burden of police officers hurt on the job and the families of those killed.

Garrett Fitzgerald was working security detail for Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton in Wakefield, New Hampshire at the time of the crash. Police said an unlicensed driver trying to pass another car crashed head-on into Fitzgerald’s car and died. Fitzgerald suffered a spinal injury.

Fitzgerald thanked the community for all the support he has gotten over the past few months. He was also presented with a check for $30,000 by the Officer Harold Vitale Memorial Fund. He also received the foundation’s Top Cop award.
