NEWTON, Mass. (WHDH) — Drivers on Route 9 experienced severe traffic delays after a pickup truck and tractor trailer collided early Monday morning.

State police are looking into the possibility that black ice caused the crash. The pickup truck slid underneath a tractor-trailer around 6:30 Monday morning.

The driver of pickup truck was pulled out by firefighters. Officials say he was awake and talking to them during the 40 minutes it took to get him out. They had to use the Jaws of Life.

During the rescue, firefighters also had to stabilize the truck and tractor-trailer. The driver was able to help them out.

“Throughout the whole process he was able to assist us with what we needed to cut where we needed to cut, entanglement was all around him,” said Deputy Chief Gino Luccheti, Newton Fire Dept.

State police reconstruction team was on the scene to figure out what exactly caused the crash. They are looking into the possibility that it was caused by black ice.
