A Sharon woman was sentenced to five years after being convicted of striking and killing a pregnant woman on the sidewalk in Stoughton last year.
Karen Blau was convicted of being drunk when she backed her car out of a driveway and struck the woman. Her sentencing was in Norfolk Superior Court on Friday, following her conviction Wednesday on charges including motor vehicle manslaughter while intoxicated.
Authorities say 35-year-old Joanne White was walking on a sidewalk in Stoughton on July 21, 2013 with her 11-year-old son when she was struck by Blau’s vehicle as it backed out of a driveway on the other side of the street.
Prosecutors say White, who was about three months pregnant, yelled out a warning to her son before she was struck. He was not hurt.
Blau’s attorney said his client’s car accelerated suddenly. Blau faces a minimum mandatory sentence of 5 years and a maximum of 20 years in state prison.
