WILBRAHAM, Mass. (AP) — The funeral for a Massachusetts sheriff’s sergeant who collapsed and died over the Easter weekend is being held this weekend.
The funeral for Hampden County Sheriff’s Sgt. Mark Ouimet is scheduled for Saturday in Wilbraham. The Republican of Springfield reports that the 51-year-old Ouimet collapsed while out for a walk with his family and the department’s dog on Easter Sunday.
He was revived and taken to an area hospital, where he died Monday.
Officials say Ouimet’s family was able to say goodbye before he died. Sheriff Nick Cocchi says Ouimet’s dog unit partner, Dalka, jumped onto Ouimet’s hospital bed to say goodbye as well.
Ouimet was awarded numerous honors for professional excellence and distinguished service throughout his 20-year career in law enforcement.
