Hey, you!  Guess what?  Tomorrow’s high temperatures are going to be reminiscent of a balmy spring day! … SIKE!  As in, “I’m so totally just kidding.”

We had a long discussion in the newsroom this evening on how to actually spell “sike/psyche” in the off-the-cuff, slang-y, teasing teeny-bopper kind of way.  You remember those days:  One of your mean friends would dangle the carrot and say “Hey Jim!  Tina totally wants to date you! (long pause) … SIKE!”  Well guess what Jim, that’s exactly what Mother Nature is doing to us RIGHT NOW.  Our afternoon sunshine was the proverbial carrot.  We don’t get to actually get the carrot.

It would be nice if we could collectively let out a sigh of relief with the appearance of the sunshine today.  All morning long, we endured blizzard-like conditions and at least another foot of snow to shovel in most places.  The conditions on Nantucket did actually verify as a “blizzard,” by the way.  It would have been amazing if the sunshine, after all of that, was Old Ma Nature’s copy-cat of God’s rainbow he gave to Noah after riding out 40 days of rain stuck on a stinky arc.  Instead, we get the coldest temperatures we’ve seen so far this season, and a good chance of more plowable snow.  “Here’s your sun, Boston! … SIKE!”

We’ll get through it.  I promise we will.

Now, enough of my lack-of-sleep ramblings and on to the stuff you actually want out of a weather blog:  The biting wind will be staying with us for the next 24 hours, or so.  Temps this evening are already crashing and as we get into our lows tomorrow, you’ll be glad you can sleep in a bit and not go out (because it’s President’s Day).  With a WNW wind still howling (around 15mph inland, and 25mph for coastal areas), wind chill readings could drop as low as -30F.  Remember, wind chill isn’t about the actual temperature but rather how it feels to our exposed skin.  With readings that low, frostbite can set in within 30 min.  If you must go out, bundle up and keep those layers on; highs tomorrow will top out in the teens.  However, there’s still more sun to enjoy… So, at least there’s that.

Tuesday could bring more snow.  Yup.  The exact track of this system is still a little unclear – which is to say, if it moves further east it could miss us.  For now though, I’m thinking that we do have a shot at plowable snow for Tuesday midday through evening.  My earliest guess (if you’re going to twist my arm) would be 2-4″ generally speaking, with a possible 4-6 well SE (Cape and Islands).  It’s not a TON of snow, but we need no more!

Average highs for this time of year are in the upper 30s to right around 40 degrees!  We don’t come close to average this week.  We will stay in the teens for Thursday and Friday.  Saturday looks like it could be a great day to hit the slopes and enjoy the reason why “we love it when it snows!!!” – or at least some of us used to.  Get out and enjoy a little recreation!  If you’re suffering from the doldrums of winter, it helps to get moving, even though it’s tempting to stay inside when it’s this cold and snowy out.

Next weekend is still quite a ways away, but it does look like we could have a shot of getting above freezing on Sunday!  No, not a beach day… looks like another storm could be on the horizon.  Stay tuned.

Happy Valentine’s WEEK, Boston!  We were going to celebrate all of the lovers for just one day this year, but… SIKE!  We get to enjoy the romance, candlelight dinners, and The Notebook on repeat all week long.  :c) – Bri
