Lot’s of weather to talk about the next 24 hours, and none of it features snow, ice or cold temps. In fact, the story will be the mild air and sporadic heavy rains that work in this evening and overnight tonight. It sure won’t feel like late December out there.
This morning, drizzle becomes showers as roads stay wet and more and more puddles develop. Temps slowly work from the 40s to the 50s by late in the day. The wind won’t be all that strong until this evening and overnight tonight, but overnight, it’ll gust to 45mph across southeast Mass, where we have a wind advisory in place. Along the coast, minor coastal flooding is possible near the midday high tide today, but major flooding is not expected.
As winds start cranking tonight, the active southerly wind also brings in the mild air as temperatures surge to near 60 tonight! With the milder and muggier air, downpours are also likely at times with even some thunder by predawn Christmas. Any thunderstorm will be capable of gusty winds and heavy rain early tomorrow morning. Overall, 1-2″ of rain falls, adding to an already very wet December. With locally heavy rains expected, there is a flood watch in place into tomorrow morning.
Despite the unsettled start to the day, the rain ends around mid-morning Christmas and some sun returns for the afternoon. So if Santa delivers that new bike, you’ll get your chance in the afternoon to ride it. Just hold onto those handle bars tight as a gusty southwest wind tries to push you over. Winds Christmas Day gusts 40mph+ for all of us despite drying out. Highs tomorrow run in the lower 60s in the morning and fade to the lower 50s for the afternoon. Only 3 times since the late 1800s have we hit 60 on Christmas. The record… 65 set in 1889.
If you don’t get to the new bike tomorrow, don’t fret, we have plenty of bike riding weather Friday and Saturday too as we keep the sun and the milder temps.
Merry Christmas and enjoy all the food, and time with family and friends.
