It a quiet and cold start this morning with temperatures in the teens and lower 20s under mainly clear skies. At least with the cold air, there’s little wind to talk about to start the day. Although some sun starts the day, that sun will fade behind thickening clouds as the chance for rain and snow increases after 4:00PM.
With a southerly wind taking over this afternoon, surface temps warm into the lower 30s in the Worcester Hills to the upper 30s in Boston to even a few low 40s down through Southeast Mass. With temps above freezing by several degrees near and east of I-95, we’ll likely have some late afternoon/early evening rain drops mixed in before a few bursts of snow take over. Farther inland, it’s all snow. Most towns stay dry until 4:00PM, after that, it’s fair game for snow snow/rain. While I don’t expect a lot of snow from this storm, early evening snow showers and heavier squalls can reduce visibility and drop a coating to a couple inches. Certainly enough for some slippery spots for the evening commute away from the coast. East of I-95, the best chance for slick spots is after 7:00PM, once it’s cold enough and the bursts of snow are heavy enough to start coating the ground.
Snow is long gone by tomorrow morning’s commute (done for most by midnight), but a few slick spots are still possible on untreated surfaces/driveways and sidewalks as cold air rushes in overnight. The wind is strong throughout Wednesday, gusting 30-40mph . Add in the fact temps struggle to hit 30, and it’ll be a chilly winter’s day.
The weather’s quiet through Friday, and then another storm arrives for Saturday. This storm will have heavier precipitation with it. The set-up is marginally cold to support snow, with the best chance for some snow likely near/outside 495. With an east wind along the coast, it appears to be mainly rain there. This warmer ocean air will include down at Gillette, where right now it looks like rain and upper 30s at kickoff. Plenty of time to track this storm though for wetter or whiter, so as they say…. stay tuned!
