JERICHO, Vt. (AP) — Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin says state officials are adding up the damage from overnight flash flooding to determine if it meets the $1 million threshold that could bring federal disaster assistance.

Shumlin made the comments Friday in Jericho after surveying the damage at the intersection of Cilley Hill Road and Vermont Route 15.

A small brook overflowed, washing a garage into a culvert. The flood waters then caved in the foundation of an adjacent home. Fletcher said he had been trying to tell officials for some time that the culvert in front of his home was too small to accommodate the flow from heavy rains.

More than 4 inches of rain fell in parts of eastern Chittenden County. Shumlin was touring the area, assessing the damage.
