BOSTON (WHDH) - A law enforcement source told 7News that a misunderstanding led to a child being left alone for more than 20 hours over the weekend and charges against his parents are unlikely.

At 6:33 p.m. Saturday, police responded to a call for a child found at Ryan Playground on River Street in Mattapan. The boy was found barefoot, wearing a gray t-shirt and riding a red tricycle. Police learned his name was Adriel and determined he was about 2 or 3 years old.

Twenty hours later, his parents contacted police about their son. According to sources, the boy’s parents assumed he was with other relatives, while his other relatives assumed he was with his parents.

Boston Police initially put out a community alert asking for the public’s help locating the boy’s parents.

In a statement, DCF said they are investigating the incident and sources tell 7News that DCF has never had any dealings with the family in the past. DCF did not say if the boy was back with his parents.
