The Los Angeles Police Department did not interview Stephen Collins, nor could it locate any victims, according to law enforcement sources.

The sources also said police were not able to verify an audio recording given to them in 2012 and released by TMZ this week.

On the tape, which NBC news has not independently confirmed, a man identified as Collins confesses during a therapy session to molesting three young girls.

New York police also received the recording and the special victims unit is now investigating the tape.

Collins has not been charged with a crime in either location.

Sources close to the investigation said the statute of limitations is an issue. There is also a third person heard in the recording, who is allegedly a therapist. Most states require therapists to report to police suspicious of child neglect or abuse.

Collins is best known for his role as a reverend on the show “7th Heaven.”
