DENNIS, Mass. (WHDH) — A family found bullets in their home that investigators say are from semi-automatic guns that came from a firing range nearby.
Steve DiPase was still amazed Thursday night a bullet shot through the bottom of his South Dennis trailer last week.
“I was standing right here where we are right now, right outside the door and I heard a loud crack and I didn't know what it was,” said DiPase.
It didn't take him long to find the cause; he snapped a photo of the bullet he says he found underneath his home.
“It was a pretty scary situation, not something I'd look forward to again,” said DiPase.
Police say a second home at DiPase’s RV park also got hit. They say the bullet ricocheted inside his neighbor's home, just barely missing a mother sitting inside.
“It’s pretty amazing. She’s extremely lucky that bullet didn't hit her,” said Sean Martin, Dennis Police Department.
“She was sitting in the front of her trailer on the couch and the bullet came probably 3 feet right over her head. This missed me by 2-3 feet,” DiPase said.
Police say the shots were likely fired from a nearby shooting range about a half-mile away in Harwich. A local father and son are accused of breaking the rules — shooting where they're not supposed to.
Police say they could face charges.
Neighbors at the RV park were rattled Thursday evening.
“We have so many kids, pets and adults on this street. If somebody had been at the wrong place at the wrong time, they could've been hit by that,” said Patrick Burns, a neighbor.
As for how the shots could've travelled so far — not hitting any trees –it's stumped just about everyone.
“Who knows what could've happened. Someone was looking over us that we didn't get hurt,” DiPase said.
Police say the father was licensed to be at the club and they are expected to be in court in a few weeks.
