BARRE, Vt. (AP) — Two owners of a Vermont spa who pleaded guilty to setting the business on fire were sentenced this week.

Kristopher Kirby and Lesilee Kirby, both of East Montpelier, were sentenced Monday in Barre after pleading guilty to arson, reckless endangerment and other charges, the Times Argus reported.

Police alleged that the owners plotted to burn down the Sundara Day Spa in Berlin in December 2018 due to financial issues with the business.

A family who lived above the business upstairs escaped unharmed.

Kristopher Kirby, 48, was sentenced to two to 10 years, all suspended except for 18 months.

His wife, Lesilee Kirby, 49, was sentenced to two to seven years, all suspended except for nine months. The state agreed to home confinement for six months of her sentence because of her health issues.

The couple was also placed on probation for 10 years.

Kristopher Kirby said at the sentencing hearing that he made an “illogical” decision and was thankful that no one was hurt. He apologized for the trauma caused to the family living above the business. Lesilee Kirby also apologized.
