BOSTON (WHDH) - Spencer the Boston Marathon dog has received a special portrait ahead of the 127th edition of the race.

Artist Tom Mosser painted a picture of the golden retriever, which will hang at the Boston Marathon Headquarters in the Fairmont Copley Plaza.

The reveal is happening months in advance because Spencer is over 13 years old and was recently diagnosed with untreatable cancer.

Despite his diagnosis, Spencer’s owners say he is happy and not in any pain.

“We’ve been given a great gift with Spencer,” said Spencer’s owner Kevin Powers. “Early on we recognized he was extremely special and our mission was to share him with the world.”

At the unveiling, Powers was moved to tears as the curtain dropped and unveiled a giant portrait of Spencer holding his iconic “We are Boston Strong” flags, which he has been known to hold in his mouth while sitting along the Boston Marathon route.

“Thank you for caring about our boy so much,” Powers said. “We could not love him more.”

Spencer also received his very own Boston Marathon Medal to celebrate his life.
