So, uh… Where is that warm-up you’ve been advertising?! Yes, it was still a bit chilly today, but I assure you our warm-up is on the way! Slowly, but surely… hang in there. Highs tomorrow will be in the upper 40s and low 50s. By Tuesday, we’re getting closer to 60. By Wednesday, we’re closer to 70!
Temps overnight will be chilly once again, bottoming out in the 20s for most and closer to 30 for Boston. This is because of the clear skies and light wind. I’ve mentioned many times before that when we have cloud cover hanging around, it will limit "radiational cooling." This is when the heat from the surface moves out overnight, and our low temps are typically recorded (all things considered "normal") just as the sun is coming up to replenish that heat. When you have clouds, the heat can’t escape as quickly. In contrast, when you have clear skies the heat moves out quickly! That’s the case tonight… Clear skies = chilly temps.
For Monday, we’ll see clouds thicken in by the afternoon and there’s also a chance of some isolated showers. We’re talking rain here, though. Remember, temps will be near 50! It’s not a lot of rain, either. Just some isolated, quick-moving showers that are in and out. It will also be a bit breezy tomorrow. Winds out of the SW at 10-20mph, with gusts up to 30mph expected.
Now, everyone has been saying, "Are we really getting into the 70s this week???" We’ve got a run at it, but there’s a big kicker here: The sea breeze can really skunk those temps for coastal areas. So, will Boston make 60 on Tuesday? I really don’t think so. Will Boston make 70 on Wednesday? Probably not. Here’s what’s happening: When you have a light wind out of the west, it’s not strong enough to hold off the sea breeze that develops in the afternoon. Therefore, before those temps can reach their full potential, areas along the coast will be cooled by a breeze coming at us from the east, traveling over 40° ocean water. I do still think that 70° is in the cards for SOME areas on Wednesday, but not for Boston (probably closer to mid-60s) and not for the Cape and islands (probably stuck in the 50s).
Either way, we are in for a spring-like warm-up this week! Enjoy it! – Breezy
