SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — Springfield police say an officer investigating a domestic incident has shot and wounded a man who allegedly threatened him with a knife.

Police spokesman Sgt. John Delaney said the man was taken to Baystate Medical Center with a non-life-threatening wound to his leg.

Delaney said tells The Republican that a woman flagged down a nearby officer at about 3:35 p.m. Wednesday and said her estranged boyfriend was vandalizing her car. He said the man ran across a nearby park, then pulled a knife and repeatedly refused to drop it. Delaney said the man was arrested on assault charges.

The shooting happened as about 1,000 students were being released from a middle school across from the park. Traffic gridlocked as police sealed off a nearby street and part of the park.
