NORTH PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A Rhode Island nursing school in operation for 117 years has announced its immediate closure.

St. Joseph School of Nursing in North Providence announced the closure Wednesday.

The school’s parent company, regional health care network CharterCARE Health Partners, released a statement saying changes in enrollment and tuition led to the decision.

St. Joseph students will be able to continue their studies at the New England Institute of Technology in East Greenwich.

The president of the United Nurses and Allied Professionals local tells WJAR-TV the closure is a disservice to Rhode Island.

She says members at Our Lady of Fatima Hospital, also part of CharterCARE Health, will make St. Joseph’s continued operation a part of current contract negotiations.

More than a dozen of the union’s members worked at St. Joseph.
