A state police helicopter equipped with an infrared camera helped authorities find a suspect hiding in a tree after an overnight pursuit that started in Worcester ended in Southborough.
A Massachusetts State Police spokesperson said it was around 2:15 a.m. when troopers were called to assist the Worcester Police Department as officers pursued a suspect believed to have broken into a store on Pleasant Street.
The suspect’s vehicle, a Mercedes-Benz E350 sedan, fled the scene and kicked off the chase, with state police supporting Worcester PD before taking over when the sedan crossed into Millbury on Route 146.
The pursuit eventually went onto the Mass Pike for some 20 miles heading east, according to the MSP spokesperson, before the suspect’s vehicle hit a tire deflation device set up by troopers in Southborough. With the vehicle disabled, the male suspect then proceeded to run into some nearby woods.
A perimeter was later established by state police while an MSP Air Wing helicopter with an infrared camera was called in to assist.
By approximately 4:20 a.m., the Air Wing crew was able to spot the suspect “hiding in a large tree,” according to the spokesperson. State police, a K9 team and Southborough police officers then approached the tree and commanded the suspect down, leading to his arrest.
The suspect was later transferred to Worcester, where an investigation into the initial, alleged breaking and entering case is ongoing.
More information on the suspect has not yet been made available, though the MSP spokesperson noted that state police will summon him for additional charges “related to the pursuit.”
