BOSTON (WHDH) - Massachusetts officials are taking measures to benefit commuters affected by the weekend closures of the Sumner Tunnel.
Free parking at the Wood Island T Station, lane adjustments in the Ted Williams Tunnel and toll discounts on the Tobin Bridge are among the measures going into effect this weekend to ease the pain of those traveling between downtown and East Boston.
The tunnel closed at 11:00 p.m. on Friday and is set to reopen at 5:00 a.m. on Monday, and drivers should expect delays.
Rideshare drivers who have to drop off and pick up passengers from Logan Airport said the closures have made it difficult to navigate around.
“Sometimes it makes me late,” said one driver. “It’s not a good thing.”
“I just follow the GPS,” said a different driver, who relies on his GPS navigate the detours. “Wherever the GPS brings me I just go.”
This closure is one of almost forty weekend closures the state has planned for necessary construction.
According to the MBTA, the free parking at the Woods Hole T Station is to incentivize travelers to use the Blue Line.
The Sumner Tunnel will remain closed on non-holiday weekends for the rest of 2022.
