BOSTON (AP) — Instead of going indoors to shop, why not go outside to walk?

The state Department of Conservation and Recreation is offering guided hikes on Black Friday in four scenic state parks in Massachusetts as an alternative to crowded shopping malls on the day after Thanksgiving.

The walks are part of a nationwide campaign started by outdoors equipment retailer REI.

The hikes will average several miles in length. They will take place at the Blue Hills Reservation in Milton, Borderland State Park in Easton, Greylock State Reservation in Lanesboro and Harold Parker State Forest in Andover.

Hikers are encourage to tweet or post photos using (at) MassDCR and the (hashtag) OptOutside.
