NEW BEDFORD, MASS. (WHDH) - Massachusetts State Police arrested a New Bedford man after a police chase through multiple towns on Monday.

The pursuit began in Rochester after police approached a suspect who they said was striking his vehicle with a hatchet. After being approached, the suspect got in the car and drove away, triggering a pursuit.

Police said the suspect waved his hatchet and a knife out the window during the chase. The suspect, identified as 50-year-old Randall Harrison of New Bedford, was eventually apprehended after he stopped his car on Purchase Street in downtown New Bedford.

Harrison was allegedly found with butane fluid and a lighter. Police said he also doused himself with the butane fluid after he got out of his car, trying to light himself on fire.

As Harrison’s car was being searched, another police chase sped past the scene. A driver with no front tire was seen leading two police cars on a chase.

Police said Harrison is being evaluated at St. Luke’s Hospital.
