With a high of 96 in Boston, we not only broke a record high temperature, but we also hit the hottest temperature of the year. We’re also on our way to a heat wave (provided we hit 90 or more tomorrow), the first September heat wave in 32 years.

In early September. In meteorological fall.

I’m not here to try and make sense of it (that would take a few blogs alone). I’m just here to tell you how much longer it will last. The short answer is that it’s almost done. The longer answer is it will get increasingly more humid before we see the refreshing air return.

So in essence, the high temperatures have peaked. The humidity has not. Tropical air will be flowing north into New England as a front closes in from the west. The issue is that this front will slow to a crawl…and then stall on Thursday. This will allow downpours and showers to catch up to – and then travel along – the front. It’s a godsend for the lawns, gardens and woods – all parched by long-term drought.

On the other side of this front, the cooler air will pour in by Friday. With lowered dewpoints and a shift in wind direction, things may actually feel cool by evening for the high school football games.

Ditto into the weekend. Saturday looks drier than Sunday at this point, but neither is hot, hazy or humid. In fact, with a robust weather system moving in on Sunday, it looks to be nearly washed out with a cool rain.

Now that’s more like meteorological fall.
