FRAMINGHAM, Mass. (WHDH) — Dozens of students at Framingham State University are being forced to move out of their off-campus apartments after their landlord sold the building.
“They scammed us. Plain and simple,” said Jordan Bain, a junior at Framingham State.
Bain is starting his junior year at Framingham State worried about where he'll be living more than his first exams. An off-campus apartment was supposed to be his home with two friends for the school year.
They signed the lease in June and then found out on Tuesday that the owner sold the building and they have 30 days to vacate.
“The landlord said don't worry about it. He was cool. Now we’re trying to get back our deposit and he's not picking up. He’s totally gone with our money,” said Bain.
The owner sold the building to Framingham State and the school says they were told only a few students lived there.
“We’re upset as well. We’re surprise by number of students that ended up being in the facility because that was different from original information that was provided,” said Dale Hamel, Framingham State Executive Vice President.
The college is now trying to figure out how to help about 40 students find a new place to live so they can focus again on their studies.
“We were angry. We were scared because we have no place to live. We were surprise; this is a big bomb to drop on us like that,” Bain said.
Framingham State said it will look into possible on-campus options, off-campus ones or let the students stay in the complex for now.
