CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu says he will not allow a proposed toll hike to move forward.

In a Thursday news release titled, “Sununu: No Coal or Tolls in Christmas Stockings,” the Republican governor says he’s long been opposed to toll increases.

He says his position hasn’t changed after hearing from citizens across the state, reviewing feedback from public comment sessions, and conferring with Executive Council members following a transportation advisory commission meeting Wednesday.

Sununu said had the five-member council voted in favor of toll increases, “I would have negated their vote.”

He says dragging the process out is not productive.

The council was expected to consider the increase this month, but that was postponed until Jan. 10 at a councilor’s request.
