PLYMOUTH, MASS. (WHDH) - A man pleaded not guilty in court Tuesday after police said he led them on a multi-town chase following a carjacking.

The alleged police chase began at the Stop & Shop on State Road in Plymouth on Monday.

Anthony Loto, 26 of East Bridgewater, appeared in court after police said he carjacked a 74-year-old woman after coming out of a treatment facility, telling police he took the car because no one would give him a ride.

Police said he lured the woman out of her car by making up a story about her husband having a medical emergency in the store.

Police said Loto led them in a chase along Route 3A and then Route 44, through three towns, before it came to a stop in Taunton.

Loto allegedly lost control of the car and crashed into a house at the intersection of South Preicent and Seekal streets.

Witnesses reported hearing a loud thud before seeing Loto climb out of the car and try to run off.

Loto was arrested and taken to Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Plymouth with minor injuries. The woman at the Stop & Shop was uninjured.

He was held on $500,000 bail.

The judge will also hold a meeting Tuesday to determine whether Loto should be committed to a treatment facility.
