LAWRENCE, MASS. (WHDH) - Two suspects accused of being part of a large New England crime ring involving ATMs were in court Monday.
Prosecutors said David Barker and Efrain Montero would break into ATM machines and steal the money inside. Police said the burglaries involved drilling through walls and cutting alarms.
The suspects, plus two others, allegedly stole hundreds of thousands of dollars from ATMs across New England.
Prosecutors said stolen cellphones put the suspects at or near the scene of most of the crimes. The suspects allegedly left their tools behind at the scene of an attempted ATM robbery in Wellesley and prosecutors said they have proof Barker and Montero went to a Home Depot the next day and purchased the exact same tools. The defense attorney said police arrested the wrong suspects, as there is no concrete proof they were at the crime scenes.
Police said Barker and Montero had $80,000 in cash on them when they were arrested, along with burglary tools and a gun.
