SEYMOUR, Conn. (AP) — A man and woman were killed Friday when their SUV sank in the Housatonic River near New Haven as rescue workers frantically tried to free them, officials said.

The mid-size SUV crashed into the river around 3:45 p.m. in Seymour and ended up floating upside down about 75 yards from the river bank. It sank in about 16 to 20 feet of water.

Seymour Fire Chief Michael Lombardi said some firefighters commandeered a resident’s boat to reach the vehicle. The man and woman were still buckled into their seats.

Dive teams were later sent in to retrieve the bodies.
