Looks like for us, Arctic high pressure wins the battle over the next few days. What initially sounds like an unwanted guest in the forecast, may turn out to do more good than bad Sunday night and Monday for those that are worn out by this winter’s storminess. Yes, it’ll be cold after tomorrow afternoon, but with an Arctic high winning the battle, the storm track stays suppressed to our south, only allowing for minor snows across Southern New England Sunday into Monday morning.
Not that this morning’s 1-3″ projection for most of the area (had 3-6″ in Buzzards Bay and Cape/Islands) was a biggie to begin with, but the trend is even a bit lower this evening. A coating to a couple inches will do it for most, aside from a small patch of 2-4″ in Buzzards Bay and the Cape/Islands.
The timing: Snow showers work through on Sunday along a cold front moving in. A coating to an inch is possible for towns that catch a heavier snow shower, but the overall nature of them is scattered, and with temperatures running in the mid to upper 30s, roads should be ok overall mid morning-afternoon. We’ll have a lull in the snow showers at times late afternoon and early evening, only to see light snow redevelop overnight. It’ll be steady at times from midnight to predawn, and with temperatures falling into the 20s, slick spots develop overnight. The steadiest light snow tapers by the morning morning commute, and aside from left over slick spots, treated surfaces should manage to be ok. The last place to see light snow taper will be across SE Mass, so a few slow downs are possible down across southern Plymouth County and the Cape/Islands early Monday.
The down side for that high pressure system building in? The cold pattern is here to stay for a while as mid-week temps run 20 degrees below average. That snowflake in the 7day forecast for Wednesday is for scattered snow showers with an arctic front. The Friday flake?…. we may get grazed by a storm that we’ll have to watch, as most indications now keep it just offshore.
