RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL (WHDH) - Now with a finish nearly 10 points ahead of second-place China the U.S. is setting the stage for another team gold medal.
Several others went for gold Sunday night from World Records to big upsets.
It was a busy second day of competition.
Michael Phelps showed the world he’s not done yet. The most decorated Olympian of all time made his Rio debut in the 4×100 meter relay.
Phelps swam the second leg, pushing the U.S. ahead of France. His teammates were able to stay strong to take the top spot.
American swimming star Katie Ledecky also shined bright.
The 19-year-old was the favorite in the women’s 400 meter freestyle final and she didn’t disappoint. She shattered her own world record and grabbed gold.
Some tennis stars fell early in the first round in Rio.
Number one ranked Novak Djokovic lost his first match against Juan Martin del Potro, who is ranked 145th in the world. Djokovic was unable to hide his tears as he walked off the court.
Sunday marked a “doubles defeat” for defending gold medalists Serena and Venus Williams. They lost for the first time as teammates in their Olympics doubles career.
The Williams sisters fell to the Czech Republic duo of Lucie Safarova and Barbora Strycova. Earlier in the day, Serena’s defense of her Olympic singles title got off to a better start.
The tennis star took down her opponent in straight sets, even though wild winds made serving tough.
Mother nature disrupted other events.
All of Sunday’s rowing events were cancelled because of the high winds.
Rain later in the afternoon may have contributed to a serious crash. A Dutch cyclist in the lead flipped over her handle bars and onto the ground.
She suffered a concussion and three minor fractures in her spine, but the Dutch Cycling Federation said she is OK.
