A teenage girl was killed and her younger brother injured in a car crash Wednesday as they were on their way to school.

Police said Quabbin Regional High School senior Brittany Murch, 17, was driving to school when she lost control of her car and struck a tree off of Route 62. The school’s opening had been delayed by two hours because of icy roads.

Murch was killed in the crash. Her 15-year-old brother, a freshman at Quabbin Regional, was also in the car. He was seriously injured and taken to the hospital.

Friends said Murch was an honor student and was also on the school’s cross-country team.

"Whenever I saw Brittany, she was always smiling and she always looked pretty happy," said friend Sam Whitaker.

Grief counselors will be available on Thursday.
