A teenager drowned after a canoe capsized in Lancaster early Sunday morning.

Police said 18-year-old Michael Thao and his uncle were fishing on Fort Pond when their canoe tipped over. The man was able to swim to shore but Thao was unable to.

The man ran to a nearby home, where he allegedly smashed through a glass door and ran inside, frantic for help. The man called 911 and got emergency crews to come look for Thao.

Lancaster fire crews launched a boat and began searching the area. A second boat was called to assist in the search. Thao’s body was located at 6:16 a.m.

Thao’s father Jang Thao said his son loved to fish and would go fishing almost every day.

"He loved fishing, he would spend all his money buying fishing equipment," said Jang Thao. "There are two fishing poles in his car all the time." Jang Thao said his family is supporting each other and they also have support from the community.

The incident remains under investigation by Lancaster police.
