People living in an apartment along the California coastline are being told to move due to erosion in the cliff.

City officials have deemed the building inhabitable because a large cavity formed in the already-unstable cliff after recent weather. Some tenants have opted to stay in the building, saying they have no other choice.

"I have nowhere else to go," said Monica Montoya, who is staying in the building. "I just moved in two months ago and I don’t have it like other people have it, where people can just pick up and leave. I don’t have money like that."

The City Council has declared a state of emergency in an effort to obtain state and federal aid to repair its pier and sea wall. They believe the apartment building to be a lost cause.

Officials have warned tenants that anyone who ignores the order to leave the building could face criminal charges.
