The Vampire Diaries returns from hiatus Thursday with star Ian Somerhalder making his directorial debut.
“It’s a lot of fun. It’s a great little ride,” he said.
And he’s even doing it in style.
“I ended up in a tutu. It happened. It happened It was a big rave scene… and everyone was in various states of dress, or undress, and I said, ‘hey, I want a tutu,’ and literally 12 seconds later there was a tutu hanging from my arm,” he said.
Vampire Diaries has catapulted the 36-year-old’s career to new heights.
“Here’s the great thing about this business: it’s so multi-faceted. You can write, you can direct, you can produce, you can act — you can do anything,” he said.
Viewers at home will also be able to join in on Somerhalder’s directing experience as he live-tweets while the show airs.
In this latest episode, his character Damon is trying to come to grips with learning his mother is actually still alive and the love of his life just abandoned him.
“The two most important women in his life, Catherine and his mother, didn’t love him like he thought, and that devastates this guy.”
When he is not on stage, Somerhalder raises awareness about climate change with the Ian Somerhalder Foundation.
“Boston has been so great to us. Boston has been incredible. I was speaking at Harvard and I thought, ‘wow, I don’t have a college degree.’ I wanted to go to college, I ended up bookitelevisionision show. And I thought, wow, I can’t believe they’re actually letting me speak here.’ It was a really incredible moment for me,” he said.
