There’s a preview of winter on the way this weekend – well, with our temperatures at least.  After the passage of a cold front earlier today (even kicking up some rumbles of thunder and small hail for Cape Cod and the Islands) we were able to squeak out another really nice fall day!  High temps were right around 60° which is close to normal for this time of year.  What else is normal for this time of year?  A parade of cold fronts to move through, one after the other… and that’s what will take our temps down this weekend – another front moving through.

Overnight tonight will be cool, but fairly typical for a fall night.  Lows bottom out in the 40s for most (closer to 50° for Boston), and clouds move in toward daybreak.  Here it comes – our next cold front – to usher in a much colder air mass.  That front could bring a few isolated showers, but nothing like what we saw with our front today.  I don’t expect thunderstorms, and I do expect most to stay dry.  The real headline with this front is the drop of temps behind it, and the feisty winds that will make the cold feel even colder.

Highs tomorrow will be in the low to mid 50s with afternoon sunshine – but the wind out of the NW will be brisk.  We’re looking for 10-20mph winds with gusts to 30mph possible.  We don’t factor in wind chill until the actual air temp drops below 50°… but I’ll tell you, the wind tomorrow will make it feel like it’s in the 40s.  Head of the Charles is this weekend, so if you’re heading out, you’ll want to pack on those layers!  I don’t want to tell you what to wear though; it’s really just a friendly suggestion.  :c)

A Freeze Watch is in effect for overnight Saturday and into Sunday morning for a widespread freeze away from the immediate coastline… Then the cold gets colder.  Highs on Sunday will be stuck in the 40s, and again, the wind will make it feel much colder (maybe even wind chills in the 30s at times).  Then the cold gets even colder, as a widespread hard-freeze is expected for Monday morning, which should end the growing season.

The word "snow" has been thrown around a lot lately, maybe because many of us are still suffering from memories of last winter – or maybe because some of us are excited about the upcoming winter (or both, if you’re an anxious & hyperactive person like me)!  Well, the Bay State is safe from snow this weekend.  All of the snow will be staying close to the Great Lakes (lake effect snow) and in Northern New England.  There could be a few flakes or flurries in the Berkshires, but that’s really it for Southern New England.  If you have been doing the snow dance though (a little early, don’t you think?), don’t worry.  We’ll get there eventually.  Winter is coming.  It’s inevitable.  Winter happens every year.

JUST NOT YET.  As quickly as the temps drop, they rebound again next week.  We got from highs in the mid to upper 40s on Monday to near 60° on Tuesday.  Fall has not forsaken us yet!  #IMHO, hot apple cider tastes better when it’s cold out.  Have a great weekend and GO PATS! – Breezy
