Thirteen people have stories of survival after being dangerously close to a lightning strike on Colorado’s Mt. Bierstadt.

Doctors told one of the survivors hit by lightning on Sunday how a German shepard took the brunt of the bolt and likely saved the people around him.

Jonathan Hardman was hiking with his friends Mary Prescott, Will Chandler and Matt Dayer. Hardman had his German shepherd, Rambo, with him.

“It was beautiful the whole way up. I didn’t even have to put on a long sleeve shirt until I was almost at the top,” Hardman recalled.

The group got started hiking early so they could summit before noon. They got to the summit around 10:30 a.m. and took pictures until around 11 when they started to descend.

The weather suddenly changed.
