The The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) ordered the telecommunications corporation AT&T to pay 7.75 million dollars.
The FCC said AT&T allowed scammers to charge its customers nine dollars a month for a directory assistance service that did not exist.
Investigators believe mostly small business were targeted in the scam.
AT&T received a fee from the companies for each charge placed on its customers’ bills and now they will refund a total of 6.8 million dollars.
The company will also pay $950,000 to the U.S. Treasury.
AT&T said it plans to send refund checks to consumers within 90 days.
