(WHDH) — Tens of thousands of people are without power Monday as a storm packing soaking rain and strong wind gusts batters the Bay State.

As of 11 p.m., more than 15,000 homes and businesses were without power, according to MEMA. Outages topped more than 50,000 earlier in the evening.

The day started out dry with a few isolated showers but the rain and wind began to intensify by the afternoon, causing tree damage in many communities across the state.

In East Boston, a large tree came crashing down across Bennington Street. It narrowly missed a set of power lines but the road was temporarily closed to traffic.

In Cambridge, some yellow, metal fences flew off the roof of a building and got tangled in some orange mesh. Those in the area said one length of fence actually fell from the mesh and came down into the street right in front a moving car in Harvard Square. Thankfully, no one was hurt.

Trees also fell in Ashland, Medford and Westborough causing road closures and power outages.

A high wind warning has been issued for the Massachusetts coastline, South Shore, Cape Cod and the Islands from 3 p.m. Monday to 1 a.m. Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Wind gusts are expected to reach 50 to 60 mph in these areas, resulting in tree damage and scattered power outages.

The rest of the Bay State, excluding Franklin and Hampshire counties, are under a wind advisory for the same time period, with gusts reaching between 45 to 50 mph.

Widespread rain arrived around 2 p.m. The rain is expected to taper off to a few scattered showers on Tuesday, according to 7NEWS meteorologist Chris Lambert.

There is also a possibility for isolated thunderstorms, capable of producing tropical-like downpours and enhancing damaging wind gusts.
