(WHDH) — There is a new way to get a bite for a bargain.

Hundreds of local restaurants have joined Too Good To Go, a community-based app that combats food waste by selling food at a discount that would have otherwise gone into the trash.

The app allows you to buy a bag containing a mystery assortment of meals that would’ve gone to waste.

“It’s obviously cheaper and a little way to help the environment,” said Celia Braun,

Oak Lawn Bar is among the Boston-area restaurants participating in the app, where owner Cory Witt said he was happy to see so many college students taking advantage.

“The old adage is ‘the starving college student,’ the fact that they’re able to eat at a nicer place and get a nice sustainable meal for a cheap price, it’s great,” he said.

Users pick up their surprise bag at a certain time and can get the food for about a third of the retail price.
