PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A top adviser to Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo has resigned after he was charged with driving under the influence.

Daniel Connors, a former Democratic state lawmaker who rose to become Senate majority leader, was pulled over by Narragansett police on Wednesday, according to court records.

Connors “conducted himself in a manner that was inconsistent with the values of my administration,” Raimondo said Friday when she confirmed the resignation.

“Dan made a mistake when he chose to drive on July 8,” Connors’ attorney, state Rep. Chris Millea, said in a statement. “He was wrong, he understands his actions have consequences, and he has accepted responsibility for his mistake.”

Connors, 44, of Cranston, was pulled over after he was observed driving in and out of the emergency breakdown lane and almost striking a police vehcile, according to the police report.

Police said Connors’ breath smelled like alcohol, and that he had a cooler on the passenger that he said contained beer.

Police arrested Connors after he refused a breath test.
