KENNEBUNKPORT, M.E. (WHDH) — President George H.W. Bush shaved his head in honor of a little boy fighting leukemia. Now the effort to raise money for the young child has taken another step forward at the Maine home where President Bush spends most summers.
"George Herbert Walker Bush has spent almost every summer of his life at the house out at Walkers Point except the time he was in military service,” said Larry Ryan, Kennebunkport Historical Society.
The exhibit has been drawing a crowd.
"People love it. Our attendance this year is at least twice what it was last year," Ryan said.
For one day, proceeds from tours will go to a little boy named Patrick. He is the son of one of President Bush's secret service agents, and he has leukemia. The former president found out about Patrick's illness and shaved his head to show his support.
"I don't recall any other president at 89 years old who shaved their head for a little boy,” said Rick Litchfield, Kennebunkport Historical Society.
The people at the historical society thought the story was pretty inspiring.
"President and Mrs. Bush lost a daughter to leukemia. And the fact that now one of his secret service agents has a son suffering from leukemia, I think there's a tremendous pathos feeling and I'm sure that touched president and Mrs. Bush's heart," Litchfield said.
And their kindness has inspired a community to rally around Patrick in his fight against cancer.
