MATTAWAMKEAG, Maine (AP) — A train carrying crude oil has derailed in eastern Maine, but there are conflicting reports on whether oil is leaking.
Pan Am Railways Executive Vice President Cynthia Scarano said 15 cars carrying crude went off the tracks at 5 a.m. Thursday in Mattawamkeag. Thirteen of them fell onto their side.
She said a couple of gallons at most spilled, most likely from oil that spilled onto the seals of the tank car covers when the cars were filled.
Department of Environmental Protection spokeswoman Samantha Warren said DEP crews are reporting slow leaks around the covers on several of the tank cars.
Trains in late 2011 began carrying crude from North Dakota through Maine to Saint John, New Brunswick. The DEP says more than 220 million gallons cross Maine in 2012.
