The University of Missouri has appointed its interim president.

68-year-old Michael Middleton will serve as the president of the school until a permanent replacement is named.

Middleton is a recently retired senior administrator and professor of law.

He takes over for Tim Wolfe, who resigned Monday as students led protests against the way the school handled racial complaints on campus.

Missouri’s chancellor R. Bowen Loftin also announced he would leave his position at the end of next month.

He will take a new position at the school beginning in January.
