COVENTRY, Vt. (AP) — Groups from Vermont and Canada have come together to oppose a company’s proposal to expand Vermont’s only working landfill.
Vermont Public Radio reports about 150 people attended a meeting Monday to discuss a permit application to expand the Coventry landfill.
Casella Waste Management’s Joe Gay says the landfill will reach capacity in about four years and wants to expand to provide an additional 25 years of use.
Members of the Quebec nonprofit Memphremagog Conservation Inc. say they are worried the expansion will affect Lake Memphremagog, which is the source of drinking water for many communities.
The Conservation Law Foundation called to delay the permit until environmental testing is complete.
Casella spokesman Joe Fusco says he’s not surprised they’re facing opposition, but Vermont doesn’t have another option.
