A county in Missouri is coming under fire after refusing to lower its flags to half-staff.

President Obama issued a proclamation ordering all flags across to country to be lowered on Sunday.

Officials in Cole County voted against lowering the flags, saying they didn’t think the tragedy warranted the sign of respect.

After major backlash from across the country, the board changed its plans.

“This is the worst tragedy since September 11 and it probably warranted lowering the flags but that’s the nice thing about the United States, we can all have our own beliefs,” said Sam Bushman, the presiding Commissioner.

The flags will stay half-staff until Sunday.
