TUSCON, AZ (WHDH) — A Purple Heart medal found in a Tucson, Arizona Goodwill will be going back to its rightful owners.

Goodwill Industries of Southern Arizona and non-profit Purple Hearts Reunited were able to track down the family of 2nd Lt. Frederick Delahunt.

Delahunt was killed in action during World War II, and somehow his Purple Medal was discovered in a box of donations at the Fourth Avenue Goodwill last week.

His nephew, Gary Rawlinson, lives in Norman, Oklahoma. He was contacted Monday night by Purple Hearts Reunited to let him know about their discovery.

“It was very surprising to me. I didn’t know him or have any opportunity to know him,” said Rawlinson. “I, of course, know his sister. [She] was my aunt, married to my dad’s brother.”

Delahunt’s sister, Kittie Anne, lived in Tucson, but she is now deceased.
