DALLAS (WHDH) - Hundreds of people were protesting outside of city hall in Dallas when shots rang out.

One man said he initially thought someone had just set off fireworks.

Another demonstrator said the scene then turned into “complete pandemonium.”

“I saw and heard six to eight shots. It looked like two officers went down. I didn’t have time to get a good look. I ran back and I was screaming, ‘Run, run, run, active shooter, active shooter. Run, run, run,” said a witness.

Minutes after demonstrators finished holding a rally on the steps of the courthouse, gunfire erupted.

Officers were targeted, five were killed.

“The officer was right here behind this column, and then the police officer tried to sneak up on the assailant or whatever you want to call it, he missed teh dude, the dude sneaked around him and shot him with AR. He emptied the whole clip into the police officer’s chest,” said a witness.

Demonstrators ran, and Dallas Police tried to secure the scene.

“They pushed us into the parking garage, then people started to spill out from the stairwell to the upper level yelling that somebody was up there with a gun and the cops just started moving us,” said a witness.

At least one demonstrator was wounded in the attack. She was shot in the leg while shielding one of her sons from the gunfire.

The woman was taken to the hospital. Her family says she is expected to be OK.
