NEWTON, Mass. (WHDH) — A worker delivering carpet crashed his van into a Verizon utility pole on Route 9 in Newton around 3:30 p.m. Friday.

“I was in my house. I was actually on the Internet…I was working from home — I heard a big bang and then all of a sudden I had no power,” said Lyla Goldstein, who heard the crash.

A man was walking on the sidewalk when the accident took place. He was cut by some debris and taken to the hospital, but he is expected to be okay.

The crash caused power lines to fall down on the tracks of the MBTA’s D line. The Elliot MBTA station was closed.

Removing the van could have made matters worse, so emergency workers and NSTAR employees were being careful.

The driver of the van wasn’t hurt.

“It sounded like a car went through the street and hit something,” said Goldstein.
