A Vatican spokesman say Pope Francis’s meeting with controversial Kentucky clerk Kim Davis should not be viewed as support of Davis’ position against marrying same-sex couples.

Francis met with Davis in Washington D.C. during his recent visit to the United States.

The spokesman says the pope’s meeting with Davis should not be seen as anything other than Francis’s kindness or as supporting her stance against gay marriage.

The pope has not issued any details on his meeting with Davis.

Francis was also not aware of how controversial Davis’s refusal to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples had become.
